Congratulations on exploring your dreams, you have certainly come to the right place to learn to Scuba Dive!
Dive Source Scuba is located in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada and is Durham Region’s Number One Scuba School and dive shop. Our Diver Education Facility teaches all levels of courses from beginner to expert as well as specialties of all kinds.
All of our basic (aka Open water diver) classes use the PADI training system, with PADI being the largest and most recognized scuba training agency in the world.
For those of you who might have heard of other training agencies like NAUI, TDI and SDI we are very familiar with them as well and several of our instructors are also certified by them.
Frequently Asked Questions about the course:
So who can take a scuba course?:
- People who like to have Fun! After that you just need to be able to be an average swimmer, in good general health and over 12 years of age. (while you can start at 10 we prefer 12)
What does Dive Source provide?
- The Course Price of $249 includes Rental Scuba gear (tanks, regs, BC, belt) while in you are in the pool (Don't worry - You don't have to buy scuba gear). You also need to purchase your course materials which includes an Instructional DVD, textbook, dive tables or eRDPml computer, logbook, class schedules etc. which run another $99
Do I need to buy anything else?
- You do need to have your own good quality mask fins and snorkel. If you don't already own these Dive Source has a large selection and will take the time to fit you properly as well as give you a 20 percent student discount to help you get started.
How are the classes structured?
- Each class you will be taking is split into approx. ½ classroom/homestudy and ½ pool and we start from the basics so don’t worry about being an expert.
- Time:
- Winter programs run 4 Sundays ( 9:00 am to 11:00am classroom then 12:00 noon - 2:30 pm in the pool) There is also more home study in this program but it is at your pace.
- Summer programs are 3 evenings (Tues, Thursday,Friday 6:30-9:00 pm) and that weekend. (Sat/Sunday 9-5) - The open water is usually the following weekend and those courses are billed with the open water.
- Classroom sessions involve reviewing what you have been doing at home as well as lectures by an instructor, all of which will make the quizzes and final review quiz a breeze.
- Pool sessions are a lot of fun. We start with a swimming and snorkel session then we progress into how to use the scuba unit. From there we will introduce you to new diving skills, which are designed to get you ready for diving in "open water" which is the final part of scuba certification.
Why do some places offer their course over 7-8 weeks when yours is only 4 weeks in the winter?
- We have found that by making our pool sessions longer (2-2.5 hours per session) you spend more time actually SCUBA diving, rather than getting changed and setting up and breaking down gear. Why spend several more nights of running back and forth for the same result? Your time is valuable and we want the experiance to be positive, productive and efficient!
What is the "Open Water" and why do I need to do it?
- To get your actual certification card you need to go diving and be evaluated by an instructor. (It's very much like doing the road test to get your Driver's license).
- This is called the open water weekend as it typically takes place two days and involves doing four scuba dives and a snorkel dive at a local dive spot.
- It will take place on a date arranged that follows your class (ask shop for details)
- There is a small fee for this which covers your rental gear, air fills, admission fees, instructor time and registering your certification ($150 for our local shore diving open waters)
Can I do the "Open Water" checkout on holiday or with someone else?
- Absolutely... You may choose to do what is called a referral open water and do your dives while on vacation and we can help arrange this. Note:The open water must be done within one year or you will lose credit for your training.
- Price for open water's vary by location and country and Cuba is not recognized for PADI training at this time.
What can I do after I am certified?
- Your PADI Open Water Scuba Diver Certification card is valid for life, is recognized worldwide and allows you to dive to depths up to 60 ft. during the day.
- The fun doesn’t stop here...We have organized dives planned throughout the year that you can participate in with either the shop or one of the local dive clubs like the Durham Divers, who plan trips and activities year round.
- You will also have opened up a whole world of opportunities to explore and expand your knowledge of the underwater world with other courses as you continue your journey.
We hope this gives you a good overview of what is involved and that you will want to jump into one of our programs. Our courses do fill quickly, so please call or come into the store to register as soon as possible and reserve your space to avoid disappointment.
